Birth Story - Part III

You can read
or

I’ll preface this post by saying; things start to get hazy at this point.  Instinct takes over by this point and I think you partially black out with adrenaline and a rush of dopamine after the baby comes.  So, I know for sure it didn’t take long from the time my mom left to Penny’s arrival, no more than 15 minutes!  Those few minutes were full of intensity in every aspect and from all corners of the room.
The room started to fill up; a telling sign that baby is near.  More nurses, more docs, more lab coats, more trays, more talking, more activity, more instructions, more EVERYTHING!
The doc finally showed up as my mom left.  She barely had enough time to suit up and sit down before Penny came bursting into the world!  Two quick and painful pushes and we welcomed our daughter at 6:23 PM.

I watched her head appear beyond my legs and a blur of activity as she began to scream.  Simply put, I was in amazement and complete bliss for the next half hour as the flurry of activity settled.  Nurses cleared her airways, began to wipe her down and asked Nolan if he’d like to tell Mom the sex of the baby.  I laugh as I write this because I still remember looking up to her tiny body being exposed to him and his head shaking and shrugging his shoulders.  He stuttered and finally said he didn’t know.  To his credit, newborn genitalia, not matter the sex is very swollen.  Chuckles erupted around the room and finally the doctor said, “It’s a Girl.”  Nolan cut the umbilical cord after.  He was shaken and overwhelmed at that moment, I remember thinking he was so sweaty for not having done much physically!
To help him regain his composure, I asked him to go tell my mom!  They came back in the room a few short minutes later as the doc was tending to me and I was finally holding our little girl.  I remember shaking uncontrollably.  I have never felt so much relief as I did in those hours after Penny was born, it was a 13-hour build up after 41 weeks of pregnancy and our little girl was with us!
The nurses were off shift at 7, so I was their last for the day; they later thanked Penny and me for making it all happen before they left.  Just enough time left for the clean up, photos, and paperwork!  I think it might have been quite the cluster if our nurses would have all changed out in the middle – I’m curious how that happens!?
One of the nurses even offered to take photos for us, which I was so grateful for so Nolan could be apart of them.

Things I learned after the fact:

Nolan is silly and before he was asked to actively hold my leg he was near my head and started whispering and humming the lyrics, “oh baby, baby, oh baby, baby” – you know, the beginning of “Push It” by Salt-N-Pepa!  Please press play below to remind yourself of this 90’s hit and why he stopped when a few of the nurses gave him the stink eye!
Be persistent – if you want to meet the other doctors in the office, make it happen.  My doctor did not deliver Penny, even though she said she delivers 90% of her patients. I asked to meet the other docs at least once and she reassured me that I didn’t need to.  Really, I just wanted to put a face to the name so if (when) it came down to someone else handling my daughters birth, I’d know their face.  It all turned out great so I can’t complain too much but it is something of an “I told you” moment.

I wish I had someone take a picture of Penny and her delivering doctor and nurses.

The room is full but everyone seems to know their small part in the chaos that is the delivery room.

There is a LOT to clean up! Haha, I know that is probably obvious but more than that I was surprised how quickly it happens!

Our little cooler was a miracle idea!  We brought a cooler of PB&J sandwiches, fruit.  Had the hospital kitchen been closed, that food is all that I would have eaten unless Nolan or my mom would have gone to get something and that would have taken away from our time.

After I scarffed down a Belgian waffle we were escorted to the recovery floor where Nolan stayed with Penny for her bath and Mom and I figured out how to put on my nursing bra with an IV in!
It was a magical night and I think back on that time fondly – it was an amazing experience and I am so glad I did it without drugs and wouldn’t have changed a thing about it.

What a weekend!

Now that it's nearly next weekend, I'll tell you of our adventurous last weekend!

Nolan and I stayed extremely busy this past weekend.
Friday was fairly relaxed, finishing up some minor things to complete Adam and Alicia's wedding invites!  Yep, that's right, I was crazy enough to construct more invites by hand - I must have forgotten how much work it was for our wedding invites.  After a few hour long episodes of Life (Earth's sequel, featuring Oprah's voice as apposed to Sigourney Weaver's), a couple beers, we created some fantastic wax seals to complete their invitation suite!

Saturday I completed the last week of my first quarter back in school with my Color Theory final.  I feel comfortable and back in the swing of juggling school and work just in time for 3 weeks off of school!  Once I finished my final I used the school's resources to edit Adam and Alicia's photo of their Burning Man Art Car!   Burning Man's theme this year is Metropolis and they'll be driving their art car named, Roving Red Light District - a swanky dive bar on wheels!  I was excited to help bring their vision to life.  After some fun Photoshop love I made a pit stop to Kinko's to print some baby announcements I designed for my good friend, Rachel who had a son March 29th.  They were sent with Monday's mail and I am excited for her friends and family to post them up on their fridges!  When I returned home it was barely noon and the sun was shinning and it was so wonderful outside!  We dehydrated fruit!  Yes, like that guy who used to sell the spray on hair - Ron Something!  After filling trays of apples, bananas, grapes, mangoes, and apricots we left the house to enjoy the sun.

After slicing and dicing, we walked to the park and played croquet!  It was so much fun!  I can't wait for it to stop raining here so we can go again!  After 2 games we were back at the house packing our picnic to travel on the Metra Train up to Ravinia Park to see Buddy Guy, a well-known Chicago Blues artist!  He was awesome and so was the entire experience.  JJ Grey and Mofro opened for him and they were unbelievable too, we even got their vinyl record!

Picnics at Ravinia were nothing short of amazing!  I was utterly impressed with the spreads people brought, they were gourmet!  Check out some of them!
This table had full on wine glasses and china!

Putting their most important item on display!

All crowding around the table - but look at that stroller for the cooler!

Of course I spot the one think Nevada there!  :)

You could even rent a fancy table and TABLE CLOTH!

Buddy Guy rocking out!

 JJ Grey and Mofro!  Awesome!

The weekend didn't stop there, Sunday we spent in Evanston (where I work) at their Custer Street Fair enjoying fresh lemonade, strolling the streets, looking at art, meeting interesting people and mostly just soaking up the great weekend.  We made it home and finally had CHINESE food at one of those places I talked about in my last post who are closed on MONDAYS!  :)

Friday, tomorrow, we're heading to Denver to visit my bestest friend!  Rach - I can't wait to see you!

RUBE GOLDBERG MACHINE

OK GO is a favorite band of mine, even before their treadmill dance routine.  Their music is upbeat and their personalities shine through their songs.  They just released their new music video on Monday featuring a Rube Goldberg machine - awesome!

If you have no idea about my "treadmill dance routine" reference, please watch the below video.

What amazed me more was when they performed their treadmill routine on stage at the MTV music awards!  Pretty inventive guys!

Since then, they've upped their stakes and created an elaborate Rube Goldberg machine in the latest video.  Check it out in the below video.

Wired Magazine wrote an article about how the machine was built: ARTICLE!

Chicago loves music...

I honestly can't believe how many concerts I've seen since I've lived in Chicago.

The number might be more than all the concerts I've seen before I moved here.  The number might have something to do with the ease of getting to the venues, the prices, and the vast amount of talent that comes through the big city!

Since being in Chicago I've seen:
Jason Mraz at the Aragon - Nov. 2008

 Aragon Ballroom (Uptown)~ Chicago, IL

Slightly Stoopid at The Congress Theater - March 2009

And that doesn't even count the number of nights I've spent at B.L.U.E.S on Halstead or the free festivals I've gone to at the parks.

A Walk in the Park - Dances

Once we finished our photo shoot, we were introduced as husband and wife.

From there we twirled on the dance floor to our song by Blood Sweat and Tears.

 We ended with a dip.

Then is was time for our Father-Daughter Dance.  This turned out to be one of my favorite times of the day!

About a minute into the song, our DJ, upon my request, asked all the other Father-Daughter couples to join us.  That was one of the most fun things to see.  I really enjoyed that moment.  The photo above is me turning to watch all the other Father-Daughter couples, young and old.

We then were invited to get our food to eat - you know how difficult it is to eat when you just want to go socialize with everyone?  I had to force myself to sit and eat something!

I am pretty excited to leave you all this weekend with my latest wedding card!

Jeremy and Lesley are the lovely couple's wedding that I am attending Saturday and so I made this card for them.  It will be printed on heavy textured card stock.

If you know a couple who'd enjoy this card - comment below and I can make a version for them!
The future is making me all giddy!

Thanksgiving in a NEW state!

Most Thanksgivings I spend with family - travel to wherever they are. This year I am heading East when they are West.

Nolan and I are visiting my mom's friend, Donna and her family in Tennessee.   Mt. Pleasant, Tennessee to be exact and I couldn't have come up with a better name of a town to visit than that.  Both Nolan and I are really excited to visit Donna and her family.  She has a whole slew of activities for the weekend and I am really excited to explore TN, a new state!

Some of the activities Donna has lined up:

  • A Men's Golf Outing
  • Rockettes Show on Friday night
  • Shopping in Nashville (~1 hour north)
  • See her daughter sing - Jen Mize

We'll be driving to Donna's from Chicago with our friend, Brian (Buddha).  We expect it to be an 8 hour drive, YIPPEE!

We leave Wednesday and we'll be playing it by ear about when to return.

For BOB - who's 3 today

I chatted with my DJ last night, our good friend, Stefan. I wanted to make sure we're on the right page and so on. By the way, Stefan is the owner of Sierra Sound and is fantastic to work with!

Among other things that I've given him like songs for this and that, I gave him a heads up on a request my sister-in-law is certain to make!

While Ric, Nolan's sister, was in town to celebrate with us when we had our civil ceremony she played, "Say Hey" by Michael Franti. Please visit You Tube now to see the video!

Ric mentioned that she dances around the house with her son, Bob to this song and I really can't wait to see them on the dance floor shakin' their booties!
Bob!
